Re-Energize Your New Year’s Resolutions

18 Jan 2021 by

Three weeks into 2021 and it’s already been quite eventful! The third week of January is also a common time for many of us to give up on our New Year’s Resolutions. Have you?

If you’re losing interest, or not seeing enough progress towards your New Year’s resolutions, you don’t need to abandon them completely.

Here are some tips to re-energize or reimagine your New Year’s Resolutions:

Are they specific and measurable?

The first thing to look at when evaluating why you’re not progressing on your goals is to look at the goal itself. Is your goal vague (“I want to get healthier”) or specific and measurable (“I want to drink 8 glasses of water each day for 30 days in a row”).

Are you recording your progress?

Sometimes you’re making progress, but you don’t see it because you’re not tracking your progress. If your goal is to do “something” a certain number of times, check it off in your Day-Timer or calendar.

As a bonus, that act of checking it off will make you feel good and motivate you to continue. It also allows you to visually see your progress over time.

Can you piggyback?

Succeeding at a new goal on its own can be challenging. Try piggybacking your new habit on an old one. If your resolution is to take up a new hobby (like home brewing, crafting, or learn the piano), do it at the same time you do another habit.

If you want to spend 30 mins each day on your new hobby, do it after your morning coffee, 30 mins before bed, or after your daily work Zoom meeting.

Don’t lose hope!

When you have a bad day, or skip doing your new habit or goal one day, go easy on yourself and start new tomorrow. If you need a boost after a bad day, consider spending some time on mindfulness by writing in a wellness journal. It’ll help to remind you to remind yourself of all the other amazing things in your life. Setbacks are normal, but getting back up afterwards is a sign of strength!

No matter what your New Year’s Resolution is, don’t lose hope now. Even if your progress is stalled or plateaued, doesn’t mean you have to abandon it completely. Pick yourself up and start again tomorrow.
